“ I’m really tired,” his mother Nadia said. “I know, Mama, but I’m afraid. Do you think they will bomb us again tonight?” “Darling, I don’t want to think about it. It’s quiet at the moment.” Sami pulled hard on his mother’s sleeve. “Mama, stay with me. Please, please tell me a story”. “OK, a fairy story?” “ No a Bible story”. Just then there was the distinct noise of a helicopter, whirring and circling in the sky. Samia woke up and started to cry, quietly at first, then she screamed. Her Mother went over to her bed and held her tight. “ Don’t worry darling, come over to Sami’s bed and I’ll tell you both a Bible story”. “Mama, please, a drink of water”. Nadia sensed that her daughter was a little feverish, so she went to fetch water.
“Listen children, this is a story about water. Jesus used to walk long distances between Jerusalem and Nazareth. You know there were no cars or trucks in those days only wagons and donkeys but we never hear of Jesus traveling in a wagon. He walked everywhere, miles and miles. He often got very tired and thirsty.” “Did he walk through our town?” Sami asked, excitement showing on his face. “Yes, indeed, Nablus was a stop-over point on the long trek to the Galilee. He probably stayed the night here and would take a rest at Jacob’s well.” “Is that where they are building a new big church?” asked Samia, then she leaned against her mother. “ Oh Mama, my head hurts too much”.
